The Cottage Meetings

A Project of the Deacons

It is our good pleasure to give an initial report on the Cottage Meetings of members of friends of the congregation between July and October of this year.  One hundred and sixteen people participated in 16 Cottage Meetings from July through October, including 13 teenagers.

In gardens, homes, or the church, gracious, generous fellow members welcomed us, hosted us, and fed us (and some of us helped provide a pot luck.)

We enjoyed a social time, getting to know one another.  We made all kinds of connections:  did you know that the Van Doran’s granddaughter and the Beliveau’s daughter play on the same volleyball team?

We talked of our feelings about the church, and brainstormed ideas for the future.  A deacon took notes at each gathering. Then they gathered on November 9th to discern themes and ideas.  The results were presented to the church on Nov. 21s, at a 2nd hour after the worship service.

The topics that came up are referenced in the report:  Church Identity, Worship, Mission, Service, Outreach, Communication, Program, Church Organization and Practical Suggestions. Across theirrange major themes appeared:

These are the major themes:1) Things which we are doing now which are good. 2) Practical Suggestions to make things better, and 3)  Aspirational changes.

The themes speak volumes:  the church is settled, happy, pleased with what's happening, after less than 6 months of Mary’s Senior Pastorate.  It wants to tweak a few things, add a few things.   It challenges with a few aspirational ideas.   Suggestions range from furniture to worship, from more chairs to imaginatively, creatively, “getting out the word” and attracting new members in targeted constituencies.

To see specific ideas and suggestions for the different topics, read on in this report!

Our deep, deep appreciation to all who stepped forward to host: Laura & Mark Beliveau, Doug Britton, Gary Brooks & Barbara Duncan, Anne & Dick Broussard, Mary Brownlow, Sharon & Don Corrigan, Anne Egner, Vicky Fish & Hugh Huizinga, Paul & Katy Gerke, John & Kathy Grant, Doug & Marty James, Carolyn & Peter Mertz, Willemein & Bob Miller, Brooke & Charlie Mohr, and Sarah & David Reeves.

Our grateful thanks to all those who participated and contributed their ideas, so that the results could potentially be so fruitful.Stay tuned for a follow-up on selection and implementation!

 In faith, hope and love,

The Deacons:  Gary Brooks, Sharon Corrigan, JohnGrant, Willemien Miller, Sarah Drew Reeves, and Tilda White
